In what can be termed as an absolutely shocking incident, a 19 year old football player of Michigan State university has been reprimanded and charged with the laptop property theft.
The sentence for Dion Sims will start from December 6. The plea has been entered in response to the charges issued. Apparently, the charges have been issued towards 10 men following an investigation of 104 laptop thefts which were valued at 1,58,000.
It has been discovered that the computers were sold online and to the relatives. A teenager has been suspended for team-related activities as well.
The accussed lawyer, Steve Fishman said the following “He did not buy the computers or sell them,” . “He pled guilty to being the middleman.”
While the laptop theft had taken place at Detroit Public Schools beginning in December 2009, the incident was reported to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in February 2010.
The stolen laptops are believed to have been distributed across Canada, UAE and within the US at Arizona and Florida. These laptops were also sold on eBay, Craigslist and to friends.
Assuming the charges are found to be true the guilty could face financial penalty in thousands of dollars .
Director of media communications at the University, Ken Cassella said, “At this time, Sims and Tisdale are enrolled as MSU students,”.“They have been charged with, but not convicted of, a crime in Wayne County. The university does not automatically take action against students charged with crimes. “This is a legal issue for the students involving the Wayne County prosecutor’s office.”
MSU Athletics Director Mark Hollis said he was aware Sims was in legal trouble earlier this year.
In another statement, MSU Athletics Director Mark Hollis said, “Since mid-February, we have been aware that Dion Sims and members of his extended family have been dealing with some legal issues,”. “Dion informed the coaching staff of the police investigation and has kept them apprised of the progress of the investigation.”
Sims’ lawyer Steve Fishman also said, “This isn’t because he’s an athlete”. “Anybody in his situation, with his age, his clean record and the cooperation he has already given the prosecution is entitled to get this break.”
Amidst all the controversy it has also been revealed that Sims is a fantastic player and was playing at Orachard Lake St. Mary’s. However, Sims won’t be able to re-join the football team for this year atleast and the same was confirmed by his lawyer Fishman.
Infact Sims was also a basketball star and he had briefly joined Tom Izzo’s basketball team after the football season, however had played in only one game.
