Meridian Healthcare employee victim of laptop theft

It just takes one quick grab to steal a laptop or mobile. Users make it easy for thieves by putting such stuff out in the open in a restaurant, in an outside pocket of a backpack or leaving windows open at night.

One such incident took place recently in Meridian.

The incident

According to Asbury Park police Detective Capt. Anthony Salerno the theft occurred between 2 and 7 a.m. June 25.

It appears that a 55-year-old woman had left a window open at her home on Locust Drive before going to bed. In the morning she found that the screen had been cut and the window had been opened more. Her house was burgled and items taken were her work laptop computer and seven thumb drives containing financial documents for her employer, Meridian Health.  The heist also included second laptop owned by the woman, two credit cards, a 19-inch television set and a bicycle. The items were around $5,000.

The woman’s laptop contained personal information of Meridian health care’s employees. There is no indication that any of the employee information was accessed. Probably identity theft was not the thief’s intention.

As to how many employees are affected is still not known. The police are also trying to find out whether the Asbury Park woman was authorized to bring the computer equipment home. The woman’s designation or profile in the company is also not known.

Laptop theft part of Cybercrime

Cyber-crime is defined as an intentional crashing of the servers, the stealing of important data, or the release of a virus or other malicious software.

Cyber criminals are getting more creative and big and small companies are in a frenzy to deploy new tools and procedures to deal with these new attacks

Security Measures taken by Meridian Healthcare

Meridian is the parent company of Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, Ocean Medical Center in Brick, Southern Ocean Medical Center in Stafford and Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel. Its partner companies include home health services and rehabilitation centers.

A national identity theft consulting company, appointed by Meridian Healthcare, is notifying the employees and providing them with comprehensive identity theft protection at Meridian’s expense for three years.

Learning from the incident, Meridian leaders are reforming security policies by offering continued protection of team members’ personal identification information in-house as well as hiring a security consultant to conduct an independent audit of Meridian’s policies and procedures.

Laptop Encryption: Protect Your Data from Hackers

Laptop Encryption

A simple incident can turn to be the biggest problem of your life and later you may find that it happened just because of your negligence. Though there are several laptop encryption software and laptop encryption software available in the market to secure our personal and professional data but still we neglect it.

According to ICO as most of the organization does not follow the rules of data encryption and they are less interested about implementing any laptop encryption software, so as a result most of the stored data of those organizations remain unencrypted. So, any sort of loss or theft can cause a huge damage to those organizations. As an example they mentioned about the incident of Freehold School. A laptop was theft from the car of one the teachers of that school, the laptop contained the details of around 90 pupils and all those data were unencrypted.

As we are aware that the hackers are more interested in personal data and they are such powerful that minimum negligence to the data encryption act can harm your system. As a prove we can take the incident of Ashampoo, a German software company, though they are also a computer security software company but the hackers got success to hack their system and stole the personal details of their clients. As Ashampoo took an immediate step to protect their data the loss of information did not harm them too much, but the incident could have been more damaging.

In case of Freehold Community School, ICO found that the management of the school was totally unaware about the importance of laptop encryption software. Though their systems contain personal data but still they did not protect their data or they did not follow any security system to protect their data. As most of the organization does not take the importance of data encryption seriously so ICO wanted to take financial steps against them. They wanted to do surveys on different organization and if any organization been found guilty under the data law act, they want to punish them.

The ICO takes some routine steps to make aware the institutes and organizations about the importance of laptop encryption software. The steps that ICO can take to secure and encrypt the data of an organization are as follows:

  • Criminal prosecution.
  • Non-criminal enforcement.
  • Audit.

Now the main question is how to stay secure………

Though there are various data encryption software and sites available to protect your personal data but you can follow some routine works to maintain the preliminary protection of the data by,

1.     Any attachment should not be opened randomly.

2.     Use antivirus softwares to your system to protect it from the virus.

3.     Always treat messages from unknown senders with suspicion.

4.     After any sort of doubt contact immediately to the nearest police station and lodge a complaint.

As, the hackers are increasing in numbers and also improving  in quality of action day by day , so you have to be sure that your system is encrypted, portable and mobile data storage devices, so that you can feel free from any sort of damage to your personal data or the data stored in your system or in storage devices. Because “precaution is better that cure”.

Data Breach Issues with Copy Machines

April 26th, 2010

Do you ever think that the copy machines which you use for xerox and photocopies can every cause a security risk? A few days back CBS had reported in a video the story about the data security inside digital photocopiers.

Watch CBS News Videos Online

However, in a flip turn according to reports by Healthcare Info Security the Affinity Health Plan has notified more than 409,000 customers of a personal information breach which has led to leakage of information stored on hard drives of leased copy machines.

According to Abenaa Abboa-Offei, senior vice president of customer and community connections at Affinity, “Like many organizations across the country, we were not aware copy machines contained hard drives that need to be wiped”.

Apparently, it is the digital photocopiers which are affected by the problem and it is caused due to their working mechanism.

Nearly every digital copier built since 2002 contains a hard drive – like the one on your personal computer – storing an image of every document copied, scanned, or emailed by the machine.

They scan a page, then store the image on a hard disk and then make copies off that image. This results in reduced failure and improved efficiency. The only catch is that digital photocopier can be breached in the same way just like a normal laptop.

Although there hasn’t been any compromise on the information, incidents like these need to be treaded with caution.

Employees – The Weak Link in Encryption

October 18th, 2009

woman-bed-laptopWith the continued growth of mobile computing and of data security laws, every day companies are investing more an more time and dollars into security systems.  Unfortunately, a common failing of these laptop security measures is the fact that they are heavily reliant on the diligent action of laptop-using employees to remain effective.  Thus, even after this investment of time and money – a security breach occurs because of the weakest link – the person behind the keyboard.

Employees Can’t Be Relied on to Enforce Security

Most organizations promote polices for the safe use of mobile computing devices and for accessing sensitive files.  However, just thinking about yourself:

  • Have you ever shared a password with another employee
  • Have you ever heard about another employee sharing passwords and not reported that?
  • Have you ever turned off an anti-virus, anti-spyware or encryption program?
  • Have you ever copied confidential data from it’s home (mainframe, shared network drive) to your PC for convenience?

Regardless of policies, the reality is that busy salespeople, unknowing marketers and harried administrative staff will ignore or avoid policy and load sensitive information onto portable computers. With more than 600,000 laptops lost or stolen each year from U.S. airports alone, companies relying on organizational policy to protect sensitive data will continue to fuel data breach media headlines.

Value of Remote Administration for Encryption

laptop-outside-womanTraditionally, organizations have used corporate firewalls and other intrusion detection systems to protect corporate networks from potentially compromised endpoints.  However, in today’s laptop-dominated environment, endpoint security strategies place the responsibility for security on the device itself and not on the employees.  This next generation of security strategy is already common in the form of anti-spam filters, desktop level firewalls and anti-virus software programs.

For best protection using encryption , there should be no local administration available for the end-user.  This is one of the benefits of Alertsec Xpress, as it  is designed to support an enforced security implementation where the user will not be able to disable the security without proper authority. Recognizing that organizations cannot rely on end-users to consistently follow IT policy or diligently apply security software, Alertsec Xpress eliminates the requirement for end-user involvement to be effective.

Losses from high-tech security breaches nearly double in 2009

October 5th, 2009

canadian-data-breachA new Canadian study from the Rotman School of Management reveals a major increase in annual losses related to Information Technology (IT) security breaches. According to this study, which surveyed more than 600 IT security professionals across the country, the costs associated with security breaches include:

  • IT security breaches cost the average Canadian organization an estimated $834,000 in 2009 – a 97 per cent increase from the $423,000 reported by the study last year.
  • Similarly, the average number of reported IT security breaches also increased 276 per cent to 11.3 per organization in 2009 – compared with an average of three in 2008.

While every type of organization incurred an increase in breach costs during 2009, the increases were different across sectors:

  • Government organizations more than tripled their average annual cost of breaches to $1,000,000 in 2009, up from $321,000 in 2008.
  • Private companies more than doubled their cost of breaches to $807,000 up from $294,000 in 2008.
  • Publicly traded companies reported a moderate increase of only six per cent year-over-year.

These alarming numbers bring with them a silver lining, as the increase in the number of reported cases could be attributed in part to higher detection levels due to compliance regulations.  At the same time, it is a shame that IT departments are not adopting data encryption software like they should be.  Even with increased reporting, proper use of tools like Alertsec could have led to a decrease is losses due to security breaches.

The study highlighted the value of IT investments in security as the top-performing respondents (those without breaches) spent at least 10 per cent of their IT expenditures on security, with the average security budget was seven per cent of the total IT spending. The study reports that Canadian organizations are finding it difficult to improve their security posture within the current economic climate – but the cost of ownership for hosted encryption services is a drop in the bucket for the millions that are spent on security.

stolen-laptopWith a 56-per-cent jump in occurrences of laptop or mobile hardware devices being stolen in Canada alone, encrypting files on laptops should be so obvious a solution!  File encryption is not a new technology – it’s an established technology. However, too many organization weigh security and convenience and land on the convenience side – not realizing how simple hosted encryption can be!
